Peer to Peer in Linux

So you’ve made the switch to Linux but would still like to access Limewire, emule, bit torrent and/or Soulseek networks? Well you’re in luck as Linux has client applications for all of these networks and some mighty fine ones at that, along with access to some pretty nice legally free networks.

amule-logo.pngaMule

The most heavily used emule client in the Linux worls is aMule. aMule is in most distributions repositories so it should be a simple matter of doing the following:

  • On Ubuntu/Debian: sudo apt-get install amule
  • On Suse as root: zypper in amule
  • On Fedora as root: yum install amule

If it is not in your distributions repo’s you can grab the source here.

Both Frostwire and Limewire connect to the Limewire network. Both of these will require that you have a proper version of Java installed.

To Obtain Frostwire

To Obtain Limewire:

nicotine-plus.gifNicotine Plus

Nicotine Plus is a fork of the original Nicotine which connects you to the soulseek network. These applications do not need to be installed from source as they will run straight out of the directory you extract. Extract the directory to your home folder, and simply cd to that directory and type ./nicotine This will open the application to all the soulseek goodness you’re used to.

There’s a number of bit torrent clients for Linux as well. Frostwire (mentioned above) has bit torrent capability but most prefer a fully fledged bit torrent client. All of these will be available in your distribution’s repos. If not I’ll give the corresponding links for download.

  • Azureus: http://azureus.sourceforge.net/download.php Azureus is a Java bit torrent client with many plugins to enhance your torrent experience.
  • Ktorrent: http://ktorrent.org/ Ktorrent is a lightweight torrent application that features ipblocking (based on peerguardian) as well as web interface control. Ktorrent, a QT applicaiton native for the kde environment is the utorrent of linux.
  • Deluge: http://deluge-torrent.org/ Deluge is Ktorrent’s GTK sister for the Gnome environment, sporting all the same features as Ktorrent, as well as also being lightweight, this will fit into your Gnome desktop much more nicely.

miro.jpgMiro

Once called Democracy Player, Miro is free tv for your computer. VLC uses video feeds as “channels” so you can be constantly updated on your feed’s newest episode. It downloads at a phenominal rate and stores the file temporarily until you’re ready to view it. You can opt to save the file permanently as well. Miro also doubles as a Youtube viewer and a bit torrent client as well. So download your files and play them within this handy application.

This is in most repo’s as well. So you can sudo apt-get install miro, etc. On Fedora, even though they have an updated Miro package, it’s still listed in the repo’s as democracyplayer.

Enjoy.
